January 19, 2014: World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei won his 10th Maybank Malaysia Open men’s singles title by beating Indonesia’s Tommy Sugiarto 21-19, 21-9 in Sunday’s final of the first Superseries Premier event on this year’s MetLife BWF World Superseries.

Lee, 31, lost to China’s Chen Long in the final of the previous week’s Korea Open, but the Malaysian bounced back in his national Open, concluding with a convincing victory over fourth seed Sugiarto.

The victory secured Lee’s seventh straight Malaysia Open title since 2008, which added to a hat-trick from 2004 to 2006, with a loss to China’s Bao Chunlai in the quarter-finals in 2007 his only setback during that period.

Malaysian fans had more reason to celebrate in the men’s doubles, as Goh V Shem and Lim Khim Wah, both 24, ended a three-year drought by beating Chinese duo Chai Biao and Hong Wei 21-19, 21-18 in 45 minutes.

Lim said: “We are definitely happy. This is our first success in front of the home crowd. We did face psychological attacks from the China pair, but we also did the same to them, assisted by our supporters, which seemed to have impacted them more.”

In the women’s singles, World No. 1 Li Xuerui of China won her first Superseries title of the year following a 21-16 21-17 victory over compatriot Wang Shixian, with the top seed fighting back from 8-5 down in the second game against the current World No. 4.

China were also victorious in the women’s doubles as Bao Yixin and Tang Jinhua overcame Japanese duo Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi 21-19, 14-21, 21-13.

China won their third gold when experienced mixed doubles pairing Xu Chen and Ma Jin beat Joachim Fischer-Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen 21-11, 17-21, 21-13.

The Yonex All England Open from March 4-9 is the Birmingham is the next World Superseries event.
