Basketball: Iran beat China to top Group C at FIBA Asia Championship

August 3, 2013: Iran (pictured) beat defending champions China 70-51 at the Mall of Asia Arena to finish top of a competitive Pool C at the FIBA Asia Championship in Manila.

Iran, champions in 2007 and 2009, had crushed Malaysia on the first day and then beat Korea on Friday, a day after the Koreans had shocked China on the tournament’s opening day.

Iran then completed a clean sweep against a China side missing ailing star Yi Jianlian. Iran started well, taking a 26-15 lead in the first quarter before finishing the half with a 41-24 edge.

China looked to make a move in the second half, cutting the deficit to just 13 points heading into the final period, but Iran opened the fourth quarter with a 13-2 run to prevent any comeback and seal an impressive victory.

Iran, Korea and China will now move into Group F with the top three teams from Group D – Lazakhstan, Bahrain and India. Malaysia and Thailand finished bottom of pools C and D respectively, so are knocked out.

Meanwhile, Qatar beat Hong Kong to top 87-64 to top Pool B. Qatar, Japan and third-placed Hong Kong all progress to Group E as the only three teams in their group.

In Pool A, Chinese Taipei edged hosts the Philippines 84-79 in a thrilling encounter on Saturday evening to top the group with three wins. Saudi Arabia were playing Jordan in a late match.
