March 5, 2015: Promoter Bob Arum’s dream of helping turn Zou Shiming into a world champion could come to fruition on Saturday when the 33-year-old Chinese star challenges Amnat Ruenroeng for the IBF world flyweight belt at ‘The Showdown at Sands’ in Macau.

Arum’s Top Rank has already organised seven boxing events with The Venetian Macao and Zou has fought in six, winning all his fights to earn a title shot within two years of turning pro.

Zou (6-0, 1 KO) beat Amnat (14-0, 5 KOs) in two of their three fights in the amateur ranks and Arum is hoping the Chinese icon can win again on Saturday, when one of the long-time rivals sacrifices their unbeaten pro record in the latest big-event production at Cotai Arena.

“What better way to begin the Chinese New Year than to have China’s beloved icon Zou Shiming fighting for his first professional world championship belt,” Arum said.

“Sands China has made The Venetian Macao a beacon for world-class professional sports events as well as one of the great boxing capitals of the world. It is a thrill to be at The Venetian for the Zou vs. Ruenroeng world championship event.”

Edward Tracy, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sands China, said the multi-bout boxing evenings had proved good business for The Venetian Macao, a renowned host of stars of music, film and sport.

“Sands China is proud to present its eighth boxing event with Top Rank at The Venetian Macao,” Tracy said. “Audiences have come to expect the best from us and Saturday’s Showdown at Sands will certainly deliver. Phenomenal entertainment events like these help diversify Macau’s tourism offering and position Macau as a world centre of tourism and leisure.”

On Thursday, The Venetian Macao even surprised Freddie Roach with a birthday cake at the final pre-fight press conference. Roach, who turned 55, will be in Zou’s corner during the last of eight bouts on Saturday. The Showdown at Sands kicks off at 5:30 pm at the Cotai Arena, with the first undercard bout beginning at 5:45 p.m.
