Chinese star Zou Shiming (centre) will fight in a 12-round WBO flyweight world title elimination bout at Clash in Cotai II, headlined by Manny Pacquiao’s defence of his WBO welterweight title against Chris Algieri.

September 24, 2014: China’s Zou Shiming will fight Kwanpichit Onesongchaigym of Thailand in a 12-round WBO flyweight world title eliminator on the Clash in Cotai II undercard in Macau, with the winner declared the mandatory challenger to WBO flyweight champion Juan Estrada.

Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao (56-4-3), boxing’s only eight-division world champion, will defend his WBO welterweight title against undefeated American Chris Algieri (20-0) in the headline bout at The Venetian Macao’s Cotai Arena on November 23.

Zou (5-0, 1 KO) will return to ring following July’s 10-round unanimous decision victory over top-10 contender Luis De La Rosa to capture the vacant WBO International flyweight title. The 33-year-old is currently world-rated No. 4 by the WBA, No. 5 by the WBO and No. 6 by the WBC, while Kwanpichit (27-0-2, 12 KOs) is rated No. 3 by the WBO.

“This will be my first time fighting in a bout that is scheduled for 12 rounds. It will be the toughest test of my skills as a professional,” said Zou, who won gold at Beijing 2008 and London 2012, and has fought all five of his pro bouts at the Cotai Arena.

“I’ve watched videos of my opponent’s fights and it’s no surprise that he’s undefeated. I respect his strength and his skills. This fight is so important because so much is at stake – most of all the opportunity to fight for the world title. I will make this the best training camp I have ever had, so I can give my best performance ever.”

Also on the undercard, Ukraine’s Vasyl Lomachenko – like Zou, Olympic champion in 2008 (featherweight) and 2012 (lightweight) – will make the first defence of his WBO featherweight title against No. 1 contender Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo (51-1, 33 KOs) of Thailand, whose only loss was to Chris John in 2012.

“I am very happy and excited to have become a world champion in my third professional fight,” said Lomachenko, who claimed the world title by beating Gary Russell, having been rated among the finest amateurs of all time.

“I just followed the plan for the world title fight against Gary Russell – work the body, make him fight as much as possible and then go to the head. Russell was very fast and I had to take my time. I felt I hurt him a few times and I did not feel his power at all.”

The undercard also includes Jessie Vargas of Las Vegas – fighting outside the USA for the first time in his pro career – defending his WBA super lightweight title against former world champion Antonio DeMarco of Mexico.

Promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank was excited to stage two world title fights and Zou’s sixth straight bout in Macau on the Pacquiao-Algieri undercard.

“We are very proud to present these three significant international fights on the pay-per-view undercard,” Arum said. “Boxing is a worldwide sport and this card reflects that.”

In other action, Hong Kong’s Rex Tso (14-0, 9 KOs) – world-rated No. 5 by the WBO – and Ng Kuok Kun (5-0, 2 KOs), ‘The Macau Kid’, will fight in eight-round and four-round bouts respectively against opponents to be named soon.

Filipino super flyweights Mark Geraldo (31-4-3, 14 KOs), world-rated No. 4 by the WBO, and Jerwin Ancajas (21-1-1, 13 KOs) will battle in 12-round and eight-round bouts respectively, also against as-yet unconfirmed opponents.

Clash in Cotai II is promoted by Top Rank and Sands China in association with MP Promotions, Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing, Banner Promotions, Foreman Boys Promotions and Tecate. The event will start at 8.00am in Macau, while the four-bout pay-per-view telecast will be distributed live to the US by HBO Pay-Per-View on Saturday evening (November 22: 9:00pm ET / 6.00pm PT).
