Football: DPR Korea win Women’s East Asian Cup, Japan beaten

2013-07-27_EastAsianCup-DPR3July 27, 2013: DPR Korea (pictured) claimed the EAFF Women’s East Asian Cup after edging China 1-0 in their last group match on Saturday at the Jamsil Olympic Stadium in Seoul, reported the-afc.com.

 

Ri Un-hyang scored in the second minute of the match, heading in a corner by Kim Un-ju past Chinese goalie Wang Fei, and the goal proved decisive.

 

2013-07-27_EastAsianCup-JPNJapan (pictured right), who were equal on points with DPR Korea before the start of the match, succumbed to a surprise 2-1 defeat at the hands of Korea Republic, with Ji So-yun scoring twice.

 

In the four-team round-robin format competition, DPR Korea managed seven points with two wins and a draw. Second-placed Japan mustered four points, while Korea Republic leapfrogged bottom-placed China with Saturday’s win over the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup champions.

 

China are already qualified for the finals of Women’s AFC Asian Cup to be held next year.
