March 12, 2015: The English Premier League has announced its biennial pre-season football tournament, the Barclays Asia Trophy, will take place in Singapore for the first time in July, www.sportbusiness.com reported.

Launched in 2003, the Asia Trophy is the only Premier League-affiliated competition to take place outside the UK and will this year feature debut appearances from Arsenal and Stoke City, while Everton, who last featured in 2005, will also take part.

A Singapore Select XI comprised largely of players from the country’s national team will complete the line-up for the four-team tournament, which will take place over two matchdays on July 15 and 18 at the National Stadium, the centrepiece of the Singapore Sports Hub.

Richard Scudamore, Chief Executive of the Premier League, said: “We know Singaporeans love their football and that they are huge fans of the Premier League. Our aim is to put on a tournament worthy of Singapore’s 50th birthday celebrations and for that we have three teams who epitomise the best of our league.”

The Asia Trophy has previously taken place in Malaysia, Thailand and China, with Hong Kong hosting three of the previous four editions.
