Golf: Presidents Cup debutant Leishman joins Australian PGA field

Marc Leishman, fourth in this year’s Masters, will contest OneAsia’s Australian PGA Championship from November 7-10.

September 6, 2013: Marc Leishman has confirmed he will contest his first tournament back home this year at OneAsia’s Australian PGA Championship, presented by Coca-Cola, to be played on Queensland’s Gold Coast from November 7-10.

Only 24 hours after being offered a captain’s pick by Nick Price to represent the International Team at the upcoming Presidents Cup, the 29-year-0ld Leishman confirmed he will be chasing his first home win in five years at the RACV Royal Pines Resort.

“I’ve won on the Web.com Tour and the PGA Tour now, but to win at home in my own country in one of the big events is definitely high on the list of things I want to achieve,” said Leishman, whose last win in Australia came at the 2008 Victorian PGA Championship.

“Scotty (Adam Scott) is going to be back there too, so to have the Masters champion playing in the event among other tour players is great.”

With a new home at RACV Royal Pines Resort, Leishman said he is looking forward to the opportunity to play the Gold Coast course, where American star Rickie Fowler will also be competing.

“It’s a strong field and a fun golf course. I think it’s going to make for a really fun tournament,” said Leishman, who won last year’s Travelers Championship on the PGA Tour.

“All the Aussie boys that are heading back are looking forward to it. Everyone is excited about the new venue. Hopefully we see some big crowds out at Royal Pines.”

The Australian PGA Championship, co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia, will round out a big few weeks for Leishman who on Wednesday was selected by International Team captain Price to make his debut alongside fellow Australians Adam Scott and Jason Day in this year’s Presidents Cup.

“It was a big goal of mine for the last few years to get on this team. Relying on a captain’s pick wasn’t ideal, but to be lucky enough for Nick to pick me was awesome.”

Leishman hit form mid-year with a share of fourth place at the US Masters, a share of eighth at the RBC Heritage and a tie for eighth at The Players Championship.

He shot 64 in the third round of the recent Deutsche Bank Championship, finishing joint 16th to move to 12th in the International Team standings, all but assuring his captain’s pick.

“Last week I had a solid finish when I really needed to,” he said. “Personally it’s been a good month for me.”

Following the Presidents Cup, Leishman will play the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai in late October before returning home for the Australian PGA Championship, presented by Coca-Cola. Last year’s tournament was won by OneAsia rookie Daniel Popovic.

The 2013 Australian PGA Championship is supported by the Queensland Government, Coca-Cola, RACV, Gold Coast City Council, Gold Coast Tourism, Emirates, Volkswagen, Hahn Premium Light, Amadio Wine and Srixon.
