March 23, 2014: Chris Ciriello scored four goals as Australia beat hosts Malaysia 8-3 to win the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup on Sunday and maintain their unbeaten run in the tournament as they prepare for the World Cup in the Netherlands.

Eddie Ockenden, Nick Budgeon, Matt Gohdes and Tristan White also scored for the world’s top-ranked side, while Shahril Saabah, Rashid Baharom and Fitri Saari netted for Malaysia.

Korea beat China 3-2 in an exciting third-place playoff, while Canada defeated South Africa 2-0 to finish fifth in the six-team tournament.

However, it was the Kookaburras who shone throughout the tournament, proceeding through the round-robin games without losing a match, scoring 31 goals and conceding only three.

Australia coach Ric Charlesworth said the performance signaled his team’s intent, but said there is still plenty of opportunity for players to make the squad for the World Cup, which starts in late May.

“We’ve got a dozen or so players at home who are still very much in contention,” Charlesworth said. “We’ve got seven weeks of hard training and it’s very competitive for places.”
