December 11, 2013: Korea fought back for a 3-3 draw with India to secure second place behind the Netherlands in Pool C and deny the hosts a place in the quarter-final of the men’s Hero Junior World Cup in New Delhi.

Backed by a passionate crowd at Major Dhyanchand National Stadium on Tuesday night, India had to win to qualify for the last eight in the 16-team FIH tournament, but were edged into third place in the group by Korea, who prevailed with a better goal difference.

Pakistan earlier finished third in Pool A after a 2-2 draw with Belgium, who topped the group ahead of Germany.

On Monday, Malaysia recorded a third straight win with a 4-2 victory over England to progress from Pool D with New Zealand, while Australia and France progressed from Pool B.

Malaysia will face Korea in Thursday’s quarter-finals, while Netherlands play New Zealand, Belgium face France, and Australia tackle Germany.

India will play Argentina in the 9/12 playoffs in Thursday’s last match, with the winner taking on either Pakistan or South Africa in the 9/10 playoff on Saturday.

The hosts will have to bounce back after players were left distraught following a dramatic, rollercoaster encounter with Korea.

The reds took the lead in the 16th when You Seung-ju – who had earlier hit the crossbar with a penalty-corner drag flick and shot just over with another – silenced the crowd with a flick over the head of India goalkeeper Sushant Tirkey in open play.

Korea celebrated after a sensational 3-3 draw, earning a quarter-final match with Malaysia.

As the atmosphere heated up in the stands and on the pitch, Korea picked up two yellow cards in the battle, but still managed a good scoring chance with nine men.

However, with three minutes left in the first half, India equalised when Gurjinder Singh finally found the target from a penalty corner before the hosts won another in the last second of the half, with Singh again converting to send the crowd into raptures and India 2-1 ahead at the break.

With Korea back at full strength, play was intense and exciting, and Mandeep Singh made it 3-1 in in the 45th minute with a goal from close range.

As India pushed to put the game out of reach, Korea keeper Lee Se-young was peppered left and right, but You converted two penalty-corners in the 58th and 60th minutes to suddenly reverse the dynamic of the match.

Now committed to scoring, India pushed for all-out attack, even giving Korea an open-net chance that Ji Woo-cheon managed to miss.

As India kept pressing, the Korean defence were under immense pressure in the final minutes, but held out to the final whistle, when they started dancing in delight, while the hosts were left down and out of the top places.
