December 19, 2014: Singapore will stage two group events in the second edition of the FIH World League, starting with a Round 1 women’s event in July 2014 followed by a Round 2 men’s event in January 2015.

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) announced the schedule for both Round 1, which will be held across 11 cities from July to October 2014, and Round 2, which features three men’s and three women’s pools between January and March 2015.

The second World League also serves as the qualifier for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, with teams able to secure their places in the Semi Finals events (Round 3).

Round 1 – for teams ranked 17 and above in the FIH World Rankings – will take place in Jamaica, Singapore (women only), Croatia (men), Lithuania (women), Bangladesh (men), Czech Republic, Zimbabwe, Portugal (men), Mexico, Oman (men) and Fiji. The dates and teams for the Fiji event have yet to be confirmed.

Nine Asian women’s teams will compete in Singapore from July 1-6, with the top four progressing to Round 2. The hosts will compete alongside Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and tournament debutants Afghanistan, Brunei and Uzbekistan.

Eight Asian men’s teams will compete in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from September 2-7, with the top two progressing to Round 2. Bangladesh will host Afghanistan, Brunei, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Uzbekistan.

Oman will host the Azerbaijan, Iran and Qatar men’s teams from October 3-5, with only one qualifying for Round 2.

Round 2 events feature both Round 1 qualifiers and sides ranked 9-16 in the current FIH World Rankings. Singapore, USA (Lancaster) and South Africa (Cape Town) will host the men’s pools, while India (Ranchi), Uruguay (Montevideo) and Spain (Valencia) will stage the women’s events.

Singapore’s men will host Malaysia, Japan, Poland and four Round 1 qualifiers from January 17-25, 2015.

From March 7-15, 2015, India’s women – third at this year’s Asia Cup in Kuala Lumpur – will have home support in Ranchi when they take on Chile, Russia, the top four sides from Round 1 in Singapore and the top team from the R1 event in Oceania.

With Afghanistan, Brunei, Uzbekistan and Zimbabwe among nations making their World League debut, the total number of teams in Round 1 is expected to top the 63 men’s and women’s teams who competed in Round 1 of the inaugural 2012-14 tournament.

Leandro Negre, President of the FIH, said: “We are greatly looking forward to the second edition of the Hockey World League, especially after the many successes of the first edition. The tournament really is shining a spotlight on hockey in every corner of the globe.

“The likely increase in participating teams for the upcoming events shows that our sport is continuing to grow on a truly global level. We are convinced this tournament will continue to go from strength to strength, aiding the development of hockey throughout the world.”

The three highest finishers from each of the men’s Round 2 events will qualify for the Semi Final stages, which will be held in Argentina and Belgium in June 2015, followed by the Final in India in December 2015.

In the women’s, the two highest finishers from each of the Round 2 events and the highest-ranked third-place finisher will qualify for the Semi Final stages, which will be held in Belgium in June 2015 and a second venue to be confirmed. Argentina will again host the Final, in November 2015.
