August 30, 2014: ‘Funky Ben’ Askren stole the show at One FC: Reign of Champions in Dubai on Friday night by stopping Nobatatsu Suzuki in under two minutes to win the welterweight belt in only his second fight for One FC.

 

Fighting in the night’s penultimate bout, the 30-year-old American dominated the Japanese from start to rapid finish as One FC made its Middle East debut at the Dubai World Trade Center Arena.

 

The former Bellator champion with a strong a wrestling pedigree took down the karate fighter with ease and then pounded the downed champion until the referee halted the bout after a one-sided contest.

 

Suzuki was the second straight Japanese fighter to lose his belt on Friday night, after Koji Oishi lost his featherweight belt to Mongolian Narantungalag Jadambaa via unanimous decision after five punishing rounds.

 

Shinya Aoki retained his lightweight belt by submitting Kamal Shalorus in the first round of the headline bout.

However, lightweight champion Shinya Aoki redeemed Japanese pride in the headline bout by submitting Iranian wrestler Kamal Shalorus in the first round. The 31-year-old secured an early takedown, first taking the mount and then the back of Shalorus before sinking in a rear naked choke.

 

In the first of nine bouts, Malaysian icon Ann ‘Athena’ Osman celebrated wildly after winning a split decision against former boxing champion Ana Julaton, with both women competing in only their second MMA fight.

 

Osman jumped for joy following her long-awaited maiden victory, after the 28-year-old was denied the chance to avenge last year’s loss to Sherilyn Lim when the Singaporean came in overweight for their scheduled fight in Kuala Lumpur in March.

American Roger Huerta completed a successful comeback after two years out by handing Englishman Christian Holley his first defeat with a first-round TKO, after English light heavyweight James McSweeney knocked out Cristiano Kaminishi with a kick in the first round.

 

Brazilian featherweight Herbert Burns extended his unbeaten MMA record to four fights with a unanimous decision over Japan’s Hiroshige Tanaka in the fourth bout.

 

UAE’s Mohamad Walid delighted Dubai fans in the third fight by earning an armbar submission in the first round to beat Vaughn Donayre from the Philippines, after Thailand’s Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke overcame Malaysia’s Ali Yakuub via rear naked choke in the first round.
