March 15, 2014: Defending champions New Zealand have been drawn against Spain, Brazil and hosts China in Pool A of next month’s Guangzhou Sevens, the fourth leg of the 2013/14 IRB Women’s Sevens World Series.

Joint series leaders New Zealand and Australia are both on 56 points heading into the tournament, which will be held at the University Town Stadium from April 5-6. Canada, who will play in Hong Kong the previous week, are third with 48 points.

Australia, who won round three in Sao Paulo in February, have been drawn in Pool B alongside England, Ireland and Fiji, while Canada head a tough Group C featuring Russia, USA and France.

Mark Egan, the IRB’s Head of Competition and Performance, said: “The Road to Rio is getting shorter and Guangzhou is another opportunity for these players to get quality competition time ahead of the Olympic Games in 2016.

“The third round in Sao Paulo saw yet another fantastic final between Australia and New Zealand, and I expect fans in Guangzhou will witness another excellent weekend of rugby at the University Stadium.”

Australia, Canada, England, Ireland, New Zealand, Russia, Spain and USA are core teams on the World Series after reaching the quarter-finals of last year’s Rugby World Cup Sevens. The eight core teams compete across all rounds.
