June 10, 2014: Newly promoted English Premiership club London Welsh and top-tier Italian side Petrarca have been announced as the final two sides for next weekend’s inaugural World Club 10s, which will be held in Singapore from June 21-22.


The World Club 10s features eight top professional sides from around the globe and will be the first international sports event held at the new 55,000-seater National Stadium at the Singapore Sports Hub.


Blues from Auckland, New Zealand, and Brumbies from Canberra, Australia, are both renowned Super Rugby franchises and will include several of rugby’s biggest names in their line-ups. The Samoa national team, currently ranked eighth in the world, will play as the Samoa Water President’s 10, while the Dragons invitational side will include stars from the Asia-Pacific region.


London Welsh and Petrarca join Biarritz Olympique of France and Welsh giants Cardiff Blues from the northern hemisphere.


London Welsh recently won promotion back into the Aviva Premiership, England’s top pro league, after defeating Bristol last week. The team will feature players such as Welsh international Sonny Parker, England international Tom May and Scotland international Gordon Ross.

It presents an excellent opportunity to play alongside some of the most famous and respected names in club rugby.”


Petrarca compete in the National Championship of Excellence, Italy’s top tier, and is historically the country’s third most successful side. Top players include Italy internationals Aaron Persico and Andrea Marcato.


Enrico Toffano, President of Petrarca Rugby, said: “Petrarca Rugby is delighted to accept such a prestigious invitation. The Club has a long history, having been founded in 1947, including being 12 time winners of the National Rugby Championships. This is another great milestone for our club and we are very proud to represent Italy against these other great teams form around the world.”


Organiser Carinat Sports Marketing has a three-year deal with the Singapore Rugby Union to host the World Club 10s in Singapore.


Tickets cost S$40 a day or S$70 for a two-day pass, while children under 12 have free admission.
