The Hong Kong Sevens at Hong Kong Stadium has sold out for the 12th year in succession.

The Hong Kong Sevens at Hong Kong Stadium has sold out for the 12th year in succession.

January 22, 2014: Sri Lanka, Chile and Uruguay have completed the 28-team line-up for this year’s sold-out Cathay Pacific / HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, which will be held at Hong Kong Stadium from March 28-30.

Sri Lanka, who finished third in the 2013 HSBC Asian Sevens Series, were confirmed as the final team in the 16-team main competition.

The fast-improving island nation will compete alongside the 15 core teams on the 2013/14 HSBC Sevens World Series – Argentina, Australia, Canada, England, Fiji, France, Kenya, New Zealand, Portugal, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa, Spain, USA and Wales.

Chile and Uruguay will compete in 12-team qualifying competition for one spot as a core team on the 2014/15 World Series. The winning team in the qualifier will replace the bottom-ranked of the 15 core teams in the ongoing nine-round World Series, which concludes at the Marriott London Sevens in May.

Chile and Uruguay secured their places in Hong Kong’s second-tier competition by finishing as the top two in South America’s Sevens championship.

They will join Japan and hosts Hong Kong from Asia; Tunisia, Zimbabwe (Africa); Italy, Russia (Europe); American Samoa, Cook Islands (Oceania); Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago (North American and Caribbean).

Bernard Lapasset, Chairman of the IRB (International Rugby Board), said: “It is with great excitement that we all look forward to this giant tournament in Hong Kong, where these 12 regional qualifiers will be competing for promotion to the Series, alongside the teams they are trying to join at the highest level.

“It is very important that the opportunity exists for all of our rugby-playing nations to progress to Series core team status and this new system guarantees that a new nation will be rewarded with that opportunity in 2014/15. After the drama of the Hong Kong event last year, we also know that it provides even more excitement for the fans, whether in Hong Kong or following on television or online around the world.”

On Tuesday, the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union (HKRFU) announced that this year’s event has sold out following the completion of the public ticket sales ballot at Olympic House. The event has been sold out each year from 2003.

A total of 21,673 people applied for the 9,000 individual day tickets available through the public ballot, with the majority requesting the maximum of two full three-day tickets. The 21,673 ballot entries received generated 111,457 individual ticket requests for the 9,000 single day event passes on offer.

The ticket requests were in addition to the 37,000 three-day tickets previously distributed through local rugby clubs, HKRFU stakeholders and overseas ticketing agents.

The HKRFU determined that the demand equates to an additional 34,000 full three-day event tickets, over and above the 37,000 three-day tickets and 9,000 single-day tickets distributed, far exceeding the 40,000-seat capacity of the Hong Kong Stadium.
