January 12, 2015: Kenyan star Gladys Cherono will make her marathon debut when she competes in the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon on January 23.
Cherono, 31, won the World Half Marathon Championships in Copenhagen last March and will make her long-awaited full-distance debut after an injury in the build-up to September’s Berlin Marathon forced her to withdraw.
In 2012, Cherono became the first woman to win gold medals at both 5,000m and 10,000m in the African Championships. In 2013, she won silver in the 10,000m at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow and became the 10th-fastest half marathon runner of all time when she set a personal best of 1:06:48 in Prague.
Peter Connerton, Event Director of the Dubai Marathon, said: “The women’s line-up is incredibly strong this year and in Gladys Cherono we have an athlete who continues to make great progress in distance running. It is a great bonus for the event to have her make the set up to the marathon distance here in Dubai and in such a powerful field.”
Defending champion Mulu Seboka and 2011 and 2012 winner Aselefech Mergia are among the favourites in the women’s marathon, while the men’s race features three-time Olympic champion Kenenisa Bekele and 2013 winner Lelisa Desisa.
Over 25,000 runners are expected to compete across the marathon, 10km road race and 4km fun run categories. As well as Standard Chartered as title sponsor, the Dubai Marathon is supported by the Dubai Sports Council, Adidas, Dubai Eye 103.8FM, Sport 360, Masafi, Dubai Holding, Dubai Police and the RTA.
