Squash: Hong Kong’s Liu Tsz-ling beats Raj for Malaysian Tour title

Hong Kong’s Liu Tsz-ling was victorious in Perlis.

Hong Kong’s Liu Tsz-ling was victorious in Perlis.

April 28, 2014: Top seed Liu Tsz-ling denied the hosts a home winner of the Women’s Malaysian Tour Squash Circuit No. 4 when the Hong Kong No. 3 beat Penang teenager Vanessa Raj 3-0 (11-9, 11-8, 11-5) in the final of the WSA World Tour 5 event at the Perlis Sports Complex in Kangar, the state capital of Perlis.

Liu, the World No. 45, reached the final – her eighth on the WSA Tour – after surviving a five-game semi-final battle with Lotte Eriksen, the fourth seed from Norway.

Eighth seed Raj made her breakthrough in the quarter-finals when she upset third-seeded compatriot Rachel Arnold. The 18-year-old Asian Youth Games champion then set up her maiden appearance in a WSA Tour final by overcoming Hong Kong’s second seed Tong Tsz-wing in another marathon that went the full distance.

But Liu, 22, justified her seeding in powerful style in the final, beating the World No. 77 in straight games to secure the fifth WSA World Tour title of her career.
