July 13, 2015: World No. 1s Mohamed Elshorbagy and Nicol David headline the draws for the Stars On The Bund China Open in Shanghai, which starts on September 3 and marks the opening event of the 2015/16 season.

Set on the terrace of The Peninsula Hotel with the iconic bund offering a stunning backdrop, the China Open will be the first ever men’s M100 tournament on the PSA World Tour, offering prize money of US$100,000 to the 16-man field.

Elshorbagy will be aiming to pick up where he left off after winning the prestigious Allam British Open at the end of the 2014/15 season.

However, as he hopes to add to his 14 PSA titles, the 24-year-old Egyptian is set to face a stiff challenge from the likes of World No. 3 Gregory Gaultier of France and World No. 7 Simon Rosner of Germany.

Elshorbagy had to beat Gaultier to win last year’s Hong Kong Open, where David was also victorious and the pair will be bidding for another success in the region.

David, No. 1 for the past nine years, is the top seed in a strong field in Shanghai that includes No. 2 Raneem El Welily, who is just a handful of points behind David in the rankings.

Allam British Open Champion Camille Serme, USA No. 1 Amada Sobhy and New Zealand star Joelle King, returning from a long injury break, are also among the challengers.

Sheng Li, CEO of SECA, investor and organiser of the China Open, said: “This is the second year that world-class squash, ‘the preferred sport on Wall Street’, will be appearing on the Bund, historically known as the Wall Street of Asia.

“We are committed to bringing the world’s best squash players to China and to give squash a new world-class stage in which to showcase itself. Thanks to our Stars On The Bund, we are fully delivering these promises.”

Tournament Director Franco Amadei, also COO of SECA Squash Academy, added: “The China Squash Open is growing bigger every year and this reflects the efforts we are making to develop squash in this high-potential market.”
