October 22, 2013: The ITTF (International Table Tennis Federation) has awarded Dubai, UAE, the hosting rights for the GAC Group 2013 ITTF World Tour Grand Finals, which will be held from January 9-12, 2014.

For a second year in a row, the prize money for the event will be US$1 million, making it the most lucrative tournament in the sport of table tennis. The Gulf regularly hosts major table tennis tournaments, with Kuwait and Qatar regularly hosting World Tour events, while Doha staged the 2004 ITTF World Team Championships.

Adham Sharara, President of the ITTF, said: “After visiting Dubai and meeting with the UAETTA President, Mr. Dawoud El Hajri, I am very confident we will have a great event in Dubai.

“In addition, we have made arrangements for many other activities at that time including the second Dream Building fund-raising dinner and many other surprises. It will be a week to remember and a great way to start 2014.”

The World Tour Grand Finals is the finale of the GAC Group 2013 World Tour, which comprises events in 18 different countries.

Movie star Susan Sarandon will add some Hollywood glamour to proceedings, as the table tennis enthusiast has been invited as a VIP to host the event’s draw and press conference at the new SPiN Dubai club.

Only the 16 men’s and women’s singles players, eight men’s and women’s doubles pairs, and eight under-21 singles players with the most World Tour points – and who have participated in at least five World Tour events – will be invited to Dubai.

Men’s World No. 1 Ma Long and women’s No. 1 Liu Shiwen, both of China, currently lead the World Tour standings. The four remaining events are the Polish Open in Spala (November 6-10), German Open in Berlin (November 13-17), Russian Open in Ekaterinburg (November 20-24) and Swedish Open in Stockholm (November 27-December 1).
