October 28, 2015: Former World No. 1s Venus Williams, Caroline Wozniacki and Jelena Jankovic are among a stellar line-up for next week’s Huajin Securities WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) announced.

The 12 singles players and six doubles teams for the WTA’s season-ending event consist of the highest-ranked players below the qualifiers for the ongoing WTA Finals Singapore, plus one wildcard.

China No. 1 Zheng Saisai, who played in the Rising Stars invitational at last year’s WTA Finals, is the singles wildcard, while Chinese legend Li Na is an ambassador for the event, which offers total prize money of US$2.15 million.

In China for the first time, the Elite Trophy will be staged from November 3-8 at the new, custom-designed Zhuhai Hengqin International Tennis Centre in Zhuhai, the southern coastal city across the border from Macau and just a ferry ride from Hong Kong.

The 35-year-old Williams, an eight-time Grand Slam singles champion who won in Wuhan earlier this month, will be a star draw along with Wozniacki, a two-time US Open finalist, and Jankovic, winner of this month’s Hong Kong Tennis Open and the 2008 US Open runner-up.

Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, a two-time Grand Slam champion and a former No. 2, also features in the singles field along with recent US Open finalist Roberta Vinci and Sara Errani of Italy.

Carla Suarez Navarro (Spain), Karolina Pliskova (Czech Republic), Madison Keys (USA), Elina Svitolina (Ukraine) and Andrea Petkovic (Germany) also feature in the singles field.

Steve Simon, the new CEO of the WTA, said: “We are excited to bring elite professional tennis to the spectacular city of Zhuhai for this inaugural event. This event showcases the players who have seen success over the year along with up-and-coming stars, all joining together in Zhuhai and celebrating their successes of the 2015 season.”

Tournament Director Peter Johnston added: “The Huajin Securities WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai is a new event on the WTA calendar with an innovative format. We are playing in an amazing venue in a beautiful city, hosting a player field that includes former World No.1 players, Grand Slam champions and finalists, along with WTA Rising Stars. The stage is set for Zhuhai to take centre stage as we complete the WTA season.”

The singles players will compete in four round robin groups of three, with the winners of each group advancing to the semi-finals. The six doubles teams will be split into two round-robin groups, with the winner of each advancing to the final.

Zhuhai will host the event for five years, after Bali (2009-2011) and Sofia (2012-14) each staged the former WTA Tournament of Champions for three years each.
