September 10, 2013: Korea secured their ticket to the 2014 FIVB Men’s World Championship by defeating Japan 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-13) to top Pool D in the Asian Men’s Final Qualification Tournament.

Korea joined Australia at the World Championship after the sides topped Pool D and Pool A respectively.

With Sunday’s win over Japan, Korea secured its ninth appearance in the World Championship, although they finished 17th on their last appearance in 2006. Japan’s defeat ends a sequence of 14 consecutive World Championship appearances since 1960.

At the end of the four-day competition in Japan, Korea maintained a perfect record with three wins and nine points without losing a set, while Japan won two games. Qatar beat winless New Zealand on the final day.

Jeon Kwan-gin led Korea with 20 points against Japan including 15 spikes, three blocks and two aces. Tatsuya Fukuzawa scored 10 points for Japan.

Korea coach Park Ki-won said: “Before the start of the tournament, the team had a training camp for a month and I concentrated on getting players in shape. I think we competed in the best condition and that’s why we won today’s match against Japan.”

Korea captain Ha Kyoung-min said: “I’m happy to win this match. We performed better than we prepared. I’m satisfied with how we played today and proud of getting a ticket to the World Championship.”

Pool B will be contested by hosts Iran, Pakistan, Indonesia and Bahrain from September 11-13, while China will host Pool C and contenders India, Chinese Taipei and Saudi Arabia from September 20-22.

The Asian Men’s Final Qualification Tournament comprises four pools of four teams. Only the top-ranked team in each pool earns a place at the World Championship, which will be held in Poland from September 3-21, 2014.
